TGIF!

Well, apparently the electrical blackouts should not be occurring any longer... that's quite the change from the expected months of them as reported just the other day!

The week flew by. It was a busy one at work and my evenings were full with friends, book club, yoga and salsa dancing.

Jess picked up AK for me and I headed over there after work. AK was pretty happy to see me... about as happy as I was to see her, I think! Although she was VERY happy to see Ben and I was pretty much forgotten as soon as he walked in the door. Hmph. That's got to change!

AK brought home a whole load of artwork today, including a lion mask and a plant! Jess said it's some kind of bean plant... whether it's green, lima or human is anyone's guess!

Ben offered to take the kids swimming, so we got AK outfitted in one of Hunter's swim shirts and a swim diaper (I thought the shirt was a wetsuit type of deal and kept telling AK she didn't need to wear a swim diaper, much to Jess and Ben's concern! Good thing they were there to protect AK's decency). Hunter is such a good swimmer, he can swim underwater for a bit even. Ben tried to help AK float on her back and she said "No, I don't want to get my hair wet!". Both kids took a noodle and swam around all by themselves. I think that's a first for AK! She also worked really hard to pull herself up at the side of the pool when she wanted to get out. It was painful to watch her, and it took her a while, but she was determined to do the same as Hunter!

AK wouldn't eat the Chef Boyardee ravioli that we gave her but she ate my spaghetti and tomato sauce. I've never really liked the canned pastas, guess she gets that from me! She got her soother out of her bag and put it in her mouth. Ben and I told her that she could only have it at bedtime and she said "I want to go to sleep!". Unfortunately that was at 6pm. That's when Ben got the idea to go swimming. After supper, AK wanted her soother again and as we were about to leave, I gave in. Somehow that didn't make bedtime go any smoother... AK took her sweet time going to bed tonight.

AK and I were talking about Molly's birthday party yesterday, talking about all the people who would likely be there. She asked if Emily would be there. Awww... guess she misses her! It should be a good party - it's at the Doghouse and it sounds like a bouncy waterslide has been rented too! xo

Temporary rolling blackouts

The electric company here, CUC, has implemented temporary rolling blackouts across the island to help facilitate repairs to two damaged generating units. It is causing a lot of frustration as there is no warning that a blackout is on its way and businesses are starting to feel the impact of trying to serve their customers without power!

What I find really funny is this part of the article:

"Customers will not receive inconvenience discounts because of the power outages. And customers will not be charged for the time the power is out.:

Surely CUC would not consider charging us for power we haven't used because we cannot use it? Ha ha. The link to the article is here in case you're interested in reading more: http://www.compasscayman.com/caycompass/2011/04/06/Power-outages-continue,-affect-businesses/

I had the pleasure of picking up Hunter from daycare as well the other day when I picked up AK. The two of them settled quite nicely with a snack / dinner of edamame beans, cheese sticks, crackers and apple slices. AK was slow eating her apple, and Hunter snuck a couple of pieces out of her bowl. Doesn't take these kids long to learn to be sneaky!

I've kept busy this week with yoga and and I tried salsa dancing for the first time last night. I think I may try to go on a regular basis... lessons are held every Tuesday starting at 930pm (nearly bedtime!!!). I've got a hair appointment and book club tonight so the evening will pass quickly.

Back to work - I'm in the midst of month-end and it's busy! xo

Catching up

I attended a conference at the church on Weds/Thurs/Fri night and Sat morning. As AK was with me for Weds/Thurs, we took advantage of the childcare being offered. AK got to go to church in her pyjamas and watch movies! Hunter was there as well, and he got the biggest hug ever from AK when he saw her on Weds night. They hadn't seen each other for a while and it was clear from that hug that they had missed each other! I think having each other there was good for both of them, as it was a late night for them and it was a comfort to them. On the way home the first night, I tried guessing what videos they had watched... went through all the usual suspects of Dora, Cars, Nemo, etc... only to have AK inform me that they had watched Veggie Tales. Of course they'd be watching Christian videos at a Christian conference... ha!

The conference was really interesting. It was led by the Peacemakers Ministry from Montana and it was about resolving conflict biblically. A lot of information was shared and I hope to be able to put some of it into practice going forward.

It made for a very tired me and AK though... I have had a very low-key weekend otherwise. Yesterday, I went to yoga, out for supper with some friends, then to another friend's for a games night. Today I've spent at home, mostly cooking and resting. I have lots of food to keep me going for the week. I made lentil soup without the ham and with curry powder (not sure this is going to be a winner), tofu with ginger and garlic, blackened salmon, guacamole and a curry quinoa salad. I also made my own granola too! It is going to be hard to not eat the whole batch tonight.

Some of us are learning that our kids take us quite literally when we say something to them. AK did something really sweet the other day and I told her that she was a doll. Her response? "I'm not a doll, Mommy, I'm a GIRL!". Jenni told me a story about Kevin telling Matthew to "jump into the shower"... he literally jumped in, slipped and cut his head open... he had to go to the hospital to get the wound glued back together. He is fine but I'm sure it wasn't fun at the time!

I think AK is going to be quite the talented little artist, in terms of singing and music. She makes up little songs to familiar tunes (she sings "Ariel pyjamas" to the tune of Frere Jacques) and has a really good sense of rythym.

We had supper with Chaz, Katie and Ellie the other night... that was fun! Both Chaz and Katie were just waking from naps when we first got there and were a bit grumpy... but they cheered up to the point that Nicole let me know what Katie said as we drove away: "Thanks for coming, I love you!". Every single time we go over there, it invariably ends up that the kids chase each other around and around. Nicole says her kids don't do it otherwise... guess AK's the influence there! It is really funny,. they love it and it burns off a lot of steam! AK is very sweet towards Ellie as well. Ellie loves to hang out in her Exersaucer and watch the kids run around. AK will pause every once in a while to give Ellie a very gentle kiss and hug. It is truly heartwarming to see that.

I had a nice chat with my Dad tonight. We talked for a while as my Mom had run out to drive my Grandma home after supper, and we decided to just stay on the line until my Mom got back. I think Dad was pretty relieved when Mom got home as I think he was starting to get bored of my stories :)

I've had such a lazy day today that I may set my alarm to catch a 6am yoga class tomorrow. I can't believe the weekend is over already and Monday is tomorrow. I just need to sit tight as there are two long weekends at the end of April, they are not that far off.

My mom mentioned that she is having some problems seeing everything on the blog... if anyone else is having the same problem, please let me know either by email or by comment on the blog so I can try to figure out what the issue is and fix it!

Dress Down Friday - AK as a puppy!

Got this email from Wee Care yesterday:

'Class P2A will continue to have fun tomorrow Friday, April 1 as they focus on the theme "Zoo Animals". Tomorrow is dubbed "Animal Dress Down Day" and teachers are requesting that if possible, children to be dressed as some type of animal (costume or improvised). There are a few animal costumes that will be available for those children who might not have costumes.

The children had fun this week, baking animal cookies, showing off their stuffed animals and singing and engaging in animal related songs and stories.

Tomorrow promises to be another great day.'

Here's what we put together with less than 24 hours notice!!!

I asked AK to pick a pair of shoes to wear today and she picked the white shoes. I was very surprised as she's not a fan of the white shoes but she said they "matched" her dress. She is becoming quite fashion-conscious!

Enjoy and have a great weekend. I'll update on the past couple of days when I get a moment's break over the weekend. xo
